Strategy #5: Creating a course overview

As many of you already know, effective instruction begins with an instructor explaining and modeling strategies. This is followed by student practice with instructor support and re-instruction as needed. What better way, then, to explain graphic organization than by showing your students how you planned for your own course! Print out and fill in the following graphic organizer to show how you implemented reading instruction into your classes.

Consider and discuss with your students how this graphic organizer changes the way you can "see" a course. How might this type of visual organization be useful for students as they work through their reading assignments?

We imagine you may have filled out your graphic organizer something like this:

Graphic organizers can also serve as a springboard to generate new ideas for your presentations, quizzes and exams, and/or supplemental study materials.
