Module Goals:

Academic readings can seem dense and complex to inexperienced readers. Therefore, students should annotate to increase their focus and comprehension, engage with the material, and self-monitor their learning more effectively. While annotating a text certainly takes more time than not, most students will find the time is well-spent when they recognize, recall, and relate the material with increased ease. This module will illustrate effective methods for both annotating a text and taking notes so that students can engage in a dialogue with a text and thereby comprehend it more deeply.

Our learning goals for this module are:

  • Faculty will develop an awareness of how annotating and taking notes can promote strong reading comprehension.
  • Faculty will learn application strategies for teaching annotation and notetaking to students.

Please note that Module 12: Reading Electronic Texts will provide strategies for teaching students to annotate digital texts. This module will focus on annotating paper texts.
