In this last example, the student conversed with the text in an attempt to understand the terms and ideas central to the passage. However, the dialogue is used to vent emotional responses to the text and passively ask questions (whether or not the reader will go back to answer them is undetermined). It's better than the first sample, and with some help from an instructor, the student can learn to use annotating more effectively. Although there is no one correct method for annotating, specific annotation strategies can be modeled to students to help increase their reading comprehension, improve their notetaking, and thus enhance their learning.
