Experiential Exercise:

To get a better understanding of what struggling readers experience in your own classes, try taking a fresh look at the readings you assign. Don't take a moment to think about what you are going to read. Instead, jump right in, and try to ignore titles, headings, and the structure. Don't stop to think, just read on, as if driving headlong into a night fog on a strange road. At the risk of carrying this simile too far, providing students with previewing strategies is like offering them a set of fog-lights to illuminate their way.
