Application Exercise:

This passage comes from a chapter on legality, ethics, and propriety in a journalism textbook called The Art of Editing in the Age of Convergence. It's been edited to save space and time, but imagine that you are a student who has been asked to read the section on Legal Problems. You may choose one of the previous strategies to preview this chapter, or use the following instructions. The purpose of this application exercise is to understand how previewing can help students determine a structure, draw on prior knowledge, and establish reading goals for better comprehension.

Prior to reading this section, PREVIEW it :

  • Read the title and all boldfaced headings.
  • Read the first sentence under each boldfaced heading.
  • Read the first and last paragraphs.
  • Then ask yourself the KBG questions:
    • What do I already know about this topic?
    • Can I identify preconceived biases I hold which could interfere with an honest reading of the author's ideas? If so, can I put them aside?
    • What are my goals for learning as I read this?
