For most students, reading at the college level is, at least initially, a daunting task. In contrast to their previous experiences, they are expected to read more material at a faster pace--which is challenging enough. Additionally, students must perform more complex tasks related to their reading than many of them have been required to complete before. What they don't know about effective reading can hurt them greatly, both in loss of learning and time. Effective readers preview their readings in order to create expectations, focus, and plan the best approach.

Just as its name suggests, previewing strategies are the first steps of the reading process, so they should be combined with strategies featured in other modules. However, these strategies can help students become active readers as they learn to engage their focus on the subject matter and read with purposes and goals for learning. At the same time, these strategies can help them build on the knowledge they already have.
