Module 14 Application Exercise Handout

Take a few minutes to consider the layout and design features of textbooks you are currently using or textbooks you are considering for adoption. Consider what is most important to you and also how to assure that your students are aware of the advantages of using these layout and design elements to improve their reading comprehension and efficiency.

BOLD-FACED HEADINGS     

     ____     Are bold-faced headings used to announce/outline main ideas and supporting idea throughout each chapter?

     ____     Do they label the content of each section significantly?

     ____     Are they color-coded?

     ____     Are they only one color but vary in size or type?

     ____     Do they vary in both color and size/type?

CHAPTER PREVIEW OUTLINES

     ____     Does each chapter provide a preview outline?

     ____     If present, do the preview outlines provide a good framework for contextualizing the concepts in the chapter? Could they be used as a framework for a reading outline?

     ____     If there is no preview outline present, can you see a simple and effective way to have students construct their own--probably by using the bold-faced headings?

EMBEDDED READING OBJECTIVES OR REVIEW QUESTIONS THROUGHOUT THE CHAPTER

     ____     Are there Reading Objectives questions embedded throughout the chapter?

     ____     Are there review questions embedded throughout the chapter?

     ____     Do these questions address significant concepts you wish to address?

     ____     If there are no embedded objectives or review questions, or if you consider them weak, are you willing to provide students with a self-check on comprehension of important ideas as they read?

END-OF-CHAPTER REVIEW

     ____     What is covered in the end-of-chapter review?

     ____     Are there concepts and vocabulary that you believe are important to emphasize?

     ____     Do you think the review items are adequate, or would you feel the need to supplement?  

ONLINE RESOURCES

     ____     Are there online resources available with the textbook?

     ____     Do they seem useful to you?

     ____     Are they provided free with the textbook or for a nominal charge?  If more expensive, would they be worth the expense to require a subscription?

SENTENCE USE:

     SENTENCE LENGTH

     ____     Are the majority of sentences at a length to facilitate comprehension?

     INTRODUCTORY SENTENCES AFTER SECTION HEADINGS

     ____     Do the majority of sections begin with a clear focus for the section with an introductory sentence?

     SUMMARY SENTENCES AT THE CONCLUSION OF SECTIONS

     ____     Do the majority of text sections conclude with a summary of major ideas to help students consolidate their learning for that section?

     CONCEPT TRANSITION SENTENCES

     ____     Do sections which conclude important ideas or concepts provide a clear transition sentence explaining how these fit into the framework of subsequent sections?

VISUALS

     ____     Are there visuals (charts, graphs, photographs, etc.)? 

     ____     Do the visuals add to the content of the text effectively? 

     ____     Do you consider the visuals an appropriate additon to the text, overall?
