Strategy #7: Considering visuals

Visuals--photographs, charts, graphs--can serve as a strong reinforcement of the learning experience for students once they understand their functions. As you examine textbooks, take a look at how well the visual elements enhance or reinforce the material presented in the text.

Visuals in a textbook can include:

  • Charts and graphs
  • Photographs
  • Pull out boxes
  • Comics and cartoons

Visuals can serve several functions.

  • They reinforce and expand on concepts in the text.
  • They further engage reader interest.
  • They aid in overall comprehension of the text.

Contribution of visuals to the overall learning experience

If your textbooks include visuals, it is important to show students how they work early in the semester so that they can make full use of them.
