By practicing these strategies as an author, students may then be encouraged to identify and understand the rhetorical strategies used in their readings for your class. Applying this understanding of the rhetorical situation as a reading strategy can help students understand more fully how a text was created, for whom, by whom, for what purposes, and under what constraints. Purpose and audience may be the most important parts of the rhetorical situation. So, if you are short on time, have students focus on these.
