You can also use this as an opportunity to reinforce what students have learned about rhetorical strategies:

Rhetorical Element

Questions

Answers

Purpose

What is the purpose of your persuasion? What do you hope will be the end result?

Audience

Who is the audience? What do you know about them that would influence your approach?

Constraints

What limitations are there? On your parents? On you?

Speaker/Author

How would you describe yourself? What tone will you take?

Text

What form will the persuasion take? A presentation, discussion, letter, email?

You may want to have students use the answers for rhetorical elements and appeals to compose a short argument to their parents. They can then exchange the paragraphs and read them to practice analyzing the effectiveness of the rhetorical elements and appeals.

Alternatively, you may want to use the blank charts provided in the handouts at the end of this module to compose your own activity more appropriate to your discipline.
