Strategy #5: Analyzing the rhetorical situation

Communication scholar Lloyd Bitzer introduced the idea of the rhetorical situation in the late 1960s. The rhetorical situation, at its most basic level, is the context in which a rhetorical event takes place. It consists of five parts: purpose, audience, text, author, and constraints. Students can learn quite a bit about the effectiveness of a reading by analyzing the rhetorical situation.
