Students' responses might look something like this:

In this passage Kathy Kay establishes some credibility immediately by positioning herself on the Capitol steps--we know that she is someplace important. She also tells us that she is waiting to do a live shot for the evening news. That shows that she is a professional. The last sentence also lends to her credibility because Womenomics is a book about women seeking a balance between work and family life. This sentence demonstrates that she is someone who has done just that. So, without saying "I am a newsanchor and a mother in Washington D.C., so you should listen to me," Kathy Kay establishes her ethos. Analyzing the credibility of the writer helps me trust her statements about the importance of trying to balance work and family.
