Students' answers might look something like this:

Obama uses pathos, or appeals to emotions and values, through the detailed imagery of the revolutionary soldiers, through the emotional language of "the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months" instead of "January 1776," through using the phrase "the father of our country" rather than "George Washington," through the call to present-day Americans to meet danger together, and so on. Obama's rhetorical choices help the audience to create powerful visual images and to feel some pull join with others to work for a better America. Obama wants the audience to feel pride and determination. Analyzing the emotional proofs helps me to understand that Obama hopes we persevere like earlier generations of great Americans.
