Strategy #8: Assessing collaboration

Other than just grading the final product, it can be difficult to assess how effectively a collaboration functions. Students know best how their group functioned, so they should have a voice in their assessment. Have them assess the group as a whole first and then each other in terms of their individual contributions. This can be beneficial for holding one another accountable. Also allow each member to reflect on (and possibly correct) their own participation in the group. Here is an example of an "Evaluating the Group" worksheet. A blank "Evaluating the Group" worksheet to share with students is provided with handouts at the end of this module.
