Strategy #1: Using icebreakers to establish rapport and introduce collaboration

There are many tried and true ice-breaking exercises used to introduce classmates to one another and to the professor. We would argue, though, that they are primarily done to learn names or help calm students' nerves. There is nothing wrong with using ice-breakers in this way; however, it is also important to discuss and analyze why this is helpful, how collaboration can work effectively, and why it's more a benefit than a burden. These four exercises can help establish rapport as groups form.
