Steps in Preparing a Syllabus

A course syllabus traditionally provides students with an overview of the course, such as topics that will be covered. All course syllabi should contain course goals/objectives, a textbook or reading materials, course schedule and university/school policies procedures. In short, it provides the "big picture" to your students. The following illustration explains the steps in preparing a syllabus using different delivery modes.

  7. Write Course Goals/Objectives
  8. Are objectives measurable?
    1. No > Reconstruct objectives to ensure that the outcomes will be measurable
    2. Yes > Include course policies/procedures

  9. Include university/school policies procedures
      1. Honesty/Plagiarism
      2. Disability Services
      3. Institution Calendar
      4. Additional policies/procedures
  10. Identify all assessment standards
  11. Do course objectives align with assessment standards?
    1. No > Re-evaluate objectives/assessments
    2. Yes > List assignments/activities with due dates
